Hiking and Exploring the Paria River
Published in Paperback by Kelsey Publishing (September, 1990)
Author: Michael R. Kelsey
Average review score:

The value is in the details
I bought this book to plan my Paria Canyon hike. The detail is astonishing- mileages, detailed maps and where to find water complete with historical information and photos. Every gooseneck and crack is described as well as the geology. The only demerits the author gets are: choosing a poor print font that is difficult to read. Mileages are in kilometers - an annoying mystery as he is a Utah native and the maps are somewhat confusing. I will submit a revised review AFTER my hike.

Hiking Arizona's Cactus Country (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (September, 2000)
Author: Erik Molvar
Average review score:

Good
I used the book to find some trails in the Saguaro National Monument. One specific trail was the Yetman Trail. Erik described the access to it and the difficulty of the trail clearly. Look forward to using it more on my trips to Arizona.

Hiking Arizona's Superstition and Mazatzal Country
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (October, 2000)
Author: Bruce Grubbs
Average review score:

Excellent hikes in Phoenix area
I gave it only four stars because there's a lot of information he could have given that he did not give, but still, given the limits of the format, this is one of the better books on hiking in the Phoenix area. Most books either cover a few of the most popular hikes or cover a small area. This one covers a small enough area to include both the popular hikes and some lesser-known hikes (and even a few off-trail hikes for those wanting the true wilderness experience), while still covering enough ground to keep you from being bored. Don't make it your only book (I recommend "Hikers Guide to the Superstition Wilderness" as well as the Forest Service publications), but if you're in the Phoenix area (or planning to hike there) this book is definitely worth buying.

Hiking Central Arizona

Excellent Trail Guide
An excellent (low cost) guide to hiking trails in and around the Phoenix area, complete with directions to the trailheads, difficulty ratings and descriptions. Hikes range from easy to difficult, and offer lots of scenic desert and mountain views.

Hopi Silver: A Brief History of Hopi Silversmithing
Published in Paperback by Northland Pub (September, 1982)
Author: Margaret Wright
Average review score:

A valuable and beautifully illustrated resource!
For anyone who admires or collects Hopi jewelry, this guide will only serve to deepen your appreciation of this beautiful artwork. After setting the stage geographically, Wright starts at the beginning with a history of Hopi crafts and culture, and early silversmiths. Of particular interest was the role played by Mary-Russell Colter of the Museum of Northern Arizona in encouraging the Hopi artists to create a design style that was uniquely Hopi, distinguishable from other Native American jewelry, and therefore profitable. The color plates of traditional and modern Hopi jewelry designs are stunning. The book closes with an index of the hallmarks of more than 300 Hopi silversmiths-- arranged chronologically and by type of symbol, with brief information about each artist. An invaluable reference for serious or casual collectors!

Household Ecology: Economic Change and Domestic Life Among the Kekchi Maya in Belize (Arizona Studies in Human Ecology)
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (November, 1991)
Author: Richard R. Wilk
Average review score:

Household ecology
Wilk develops an excellent model for talking about social organization. Based around an ethnography of the Kekchi Maya, household ecology presents a model that allows the anthropologist to deal with such issues as history, gender relations, markets, subsistence and political organization (and that is easily transferred to different settings for comparative work). This is a book for readers interested in understanding how households function as social institutions, it is replete with information and useful data. Not for a beginner, but for the student of anthropology and ecology, this is an important text.

How to Form a Corporation Llc or Partnership in Arizona
Published in Paperback by Corporate Publishing Company (April, 2000)
Author: W. Dean Brown
Average review score:

Easy To Follow Steps
The book was very good in terms of a high level overview of the steps necessary to setup a business in Arizona. The forms in the book are slightly outdated but the information to put on the new forms is still correct. I would definatly recommend reading this book instead of paying an outside service to fill out the paperwork.

The Humpbacked Fluteplayer
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (March, 1994)
Author: Sharman Apt Russell
Average review score:

A lyrical book
Two sixth graders, May and Evan, are on a field trip in Phoenix, Arizona and suddenly find themselves in an alternate time. At first one thinks they have gone into the past, as they meet low-technology-level people, but it turns out that these tribes have magical abilities. May and Evan have to find out why they're here and help the children of this time.

I thought this book was well-written and certainly would be an interesting story for a sixth grader. There were a few violent acts committed but it wasn't too squeamish because the author told about them in a manner-of-fact way. For example one of the slave "Indians" is crippled when his owners cut his Achilles tendon. This sounds horrifying to me but the author simply mentions it in a non-bloody manner and continues with the story.

Overlaying it all is a sweet story about May coming to love the desert. A good read.

Incorporating in Arizona: Everything You Need to Form and Run an Arizona Corporation
Published in Paperback by Golden West Pub (December, 1992)
Author: Charles E. Davis
Average review score:

Everything you need to know to incorporate
This is an excellent book for someone (like me) who was clueless about how and why to incorporate. Arizona is such a friendly and inexpensive state for starting a business -- with this book you can do the whole shebang (book included) for less than $150.00.

Indian Trader: The Life and Times of J.L. Hubbell
Published in Hardcover by Kiva Publishing, Inc (01 April, 2000)
Author: Martha Blue
Average review score:

Indian Trader: the Life and Times of J. L. Hubbell
This new book by Ms Blue is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Indian trader of the Southwest or indeed of the Southwest itself or of the Navajo people. For anyone who has visited the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, at Ganado, you will feel as if you can indentify with the places mentioned. Ms Blue's long connection with the Navajo people gives her a great viewpoint from which to approach this subject.
